"In the end, I have to believe in hope. Please make this worth it."
―Broyles' last words to Olivia in the original timeline.[src]

Colonel Phillip Broyles is the former leader of Fringe Division, a special adjunct to the DoD in the Alternate Universe. He answered to Secretary Walter Bishop at the DoD headquarters on Liberty Island in New York City.

In both timelines, Colonel Broyles compromises his allegiance to serve two other powers: the Prime Universe Fringe Division itself—in the original timeline—in order to save both universes. He did so out of sympathy for and in order to save Olivia Dunham's life. And David Robert Jones—in the Alternate Timeline—in order to save his own ill son's life.

Long after his incarceration in the Alternate Timeline, he was eventually succeeded by Olivia Dunham (Alternate Universe) by the year 2036. In the Final 2015 Reset, should the Other Side not be revisited in between those years, this would stay on course to still happen.

Background[]

Broyles is the still-married husband of Diane Broyles. ("The Abducted") He is also the father to their two children, a son and a daughter. ("Marionette")

His son Christopher is blind as a result of his abductor, the Candyman A.K.A Reverend Marcus, stealing his youth. His daughter is unseen and her name is unknown.

Biography[]

Original Timeline[]

Colonel Broyles is introduced officially in the second season finale. He aborts the quarantine of the opera house as recommended by Agent Astrid Farnsworth (Alternate Universe). ("Over There: Part 1")

Later, he wakes up Fauxlivia on Sunday to give her a new assignment as requested by Secretary Walter "Walternate" Bishop. He later led the team to the opera house to switch the two Olivias. ("Over There: Part 2")

Finally, he led the team to recapture Olivia Dunham after her escape from Liberty Island and learned she would be an unknowing impersonator with Fauxlivia's memories. ("Olivia")

Walternate explains he did the swap to make her a willing experimental subject and ultimately, learn how to cross over to the other universe without any dangerous consequences. ("The Plateau")

Marilyn Dunham (Alternate Universe) expressed concerns to him about Fauxlivia "not seeming like herself" and stated she was not ready to return to work after her "breakdown". Later, he appears taken aback by Olivia's claims that Joshua and Matthew Rose swapped. ("Amber 31422")

After the Candyman returned, he reluctantly agreed to allow Olivia Dunham to help his blind son, Christopher who was a victim despite tension between the two. He later discerns she knew who she was when she yelled "FBI" when rescuing another young boy from the Candyman. But he does not tell Walternate. ("The Abducted")

Alternate Broyles is convinced to help Olivia Dunham from certain death due to his wife's words. He is killed helping her escape to Walternate's lab.

Colonel Broyles Morgue 308

Colonel Broyles in the morgue.

When Fauxlivia is needed to be teleported back to the alternate universe, his mutilated body is teleported to the Prime Universe to displace her weight in the exchange.

The Prime Universe Phillip Broyles sees him dead. In the morgue, he shuts his eyes, deeply distressed at seeing his alternate's dead body. ("Entrada")

Prime Broyles later expresses shock and sadness learning his counterpart was still in a stable marriage at the time of his death. Olivia later told him that Colonel Broyles wasn't "that unlike" him with a smile, and called him a friend that she had made a promise to—a promise that was to find a way to allow both universes to survive. ("Marionette")

Alternate Timeline[]

Colonel Broyles 418 Prison

Colonel Broyles is incarcerated.

In the Alternate Timeline, Colonel Broyles is still alive. ("One Night in October") He is secretly working with David Robert Jones. ("Enemy of My Enemy")

He gave alert of the hit that culminates in the assassination of Captain Lincoln Lee. ("Everything In Its Right Place")

It was later revealed that Phillip was used by Jones in order to exchange information for a cure for his blinded son, Christopher. The treatment has been successful.

In the end, he could not go against his conscience and surrendered himself to Phillip Broyles of the prime universe. He meets Nina Sharp (Alternate Universe) in prison. ("The Consultant")

In the future of 2036, Olivia Dunham (Alternate Universe) succeeded his command. It is unknown if Colonel Broyles was eventually released or what happened to his family and son without Jones' treatments. ("Liberty")

Final Reset in 2015[]

Should Peter Bishop and Olivia Dunham of the Prime Universe never intervene with the Other Side again, Broyles would still be succeeded by Fauxlivia by 2036 with his fate still being uncertain. ("An Enemy of Fate")

Alternate Universes[]

Early incarnation of Alternate Broyles[]

Alternate Broyles 119 Road Not Taken

An early version of Alternate Broyles before the writers had a full vision for the Parallel Universe.

An early incarnation of the character originally appeared in "The Road Not Taken".

This version differs from what is later learned about the Other Side, calling into question whether it can be considered the same character.

This same version of Alternate Broyles still worked for the FBI, which Colonel Broyles later tells Olivia "ceased to exist a decade ago" in the Alternate Universe, at the end of the episode "The Abducted".

If true, this would signify a third, unexplored universe. Other inconsistencies with this early incarnation and what is later known about the Alternate Universe include the depiction of Cortexiphan subjects in a parallel universe. Walternate did not experiment on children in the other universe, so this conflicts with the established continuity later in the series, and therefore may be a different reality.

Prime Universe[]

The Prime Universe version of Broyles is introduced in the Pilot episode. He had a friendship with Sanford Harris.
